Rehtorical Strategy (HW #4 for 9/23)

Since the Bedford Handbook seems to be as rare as the dodo at the College Bookstore, I've included the reading as links below. Please visit them so that you may complete your reading (Section 3c) for this Tuesday, 9/21. I ask that you print these pages and bring them to class, if at all possible. You will need to save them to your computer and then open them with Adobe Acrobat. Here is the link.

After doing the reading in the Bedford Handbook (p.67-75), answer the following prompt by commenting to this posting below to complete the homework for 9/23.

Argue for or against the use of cellphones in two paragraphs, using a different paragraph strategy/rhetorical device in each. Be sure of head each paragraph with a label that identifies which strategy/device you are employing to argue your point.

  1. Comparison and contrast
Using cell phone is more dangerous than smoking. Both cell phones and smoking can cause serious health affection in human bodies such as cancers. According to factor, cancers take at least 10 years to develop, which has influenced earlier cancer. Although using cell phone and smoking have the highest risk to cause people in cancers, cell phone can double the risk of cancers. According to the statistic, the number of people who die in using cell phones is much higher than the people who die in smoking. Based on the fact that there are three billion people are using cell phone worldwide. The usage of cell phone is three times higher than people who smoke cigarette. Smoking kills five million globally each, however, cell phones can kills more than five million people within a year. Smoking can only cause lung cancer to long term smokers. Unlike smoking, using cell phone has more affections than smoking. Cell phones can not only cause people in brain cancers, but also cause them in car accidents, and injuries.

    Cause and effect
Cell phones are extremely dangerous to people’s health when they spend long period of time using on cell phones. With practically everyone own cell phones and spend a considerable amount of time on them each day. More and more cell phone users have serious health problems. Cell phones pose a health risk in human bodies when people use cell phone in an unreasonable amount of time each day. As the cell phone users spend long period of time on cell phones, the long effects have been exist in order to destroy people’s health. These long term effects include the damage of hearing, cancers, and headaches. According to unofficial statistics, it is possible that using cell phones on a regular basis can increase the chance to have brain cancers or brain tumors by 2.5 times. People who spend long periods of time talking on cell phones have mentioned fatigue, a loss of concentration and sometimes headaches. From these long term effects, people should consider to decrease the usage of cell phones in order to avoid the damage of using cell phones in long period of time before cell phones endanger people’s health.

  2. Examples and Illustrations
Cell phone use is highly important in our society. Removing cell phone use, today or limiting cell phone use can affect many individual lives. Because technology has advanced in society greatly, many people cannot live without a cell phone. If there is an emergency, such as a family one, a person can be reach on their cell phone. For example, if a baby is born, a doctor or the patient’s family can be reached to come to the delivery of the baby. However, if the patient’s family or doctor couldn’t be reached, everyone would be a situation. The doctor wouldn’t be able to deliver the baby, which is a problem; the patient’s family wouldn’t be reached to see the baby is born. Having both problems occur will make situations even worse. Many people have depended on cell phones for emergencies or anything that is important to their lives.

    Cause and Effect
Both authors Rowe and Guernsey compared cell phones to second- hand smoke, stating it was “second- hand noise.” Yes, that can be true cell phones can be loud at times but it isn’t has serious as second- hand smoke. It’s a fact that second- hand smoke causes cancer, breathing problems, and other health related issues that deal with second- hand smoke. Cell phones just cause noise which leads to annoyances. Relating second- hand noise to second-hand smoke, isn’t a good point, only because smoking is way more complicated than cell phones. However, cell phones and cigarettes are related in way. There is more health concerns involved, that’s why people can’t smoke in certain places. Just like, cell phones can’t be in the intensive care unit because it’s a health issue. But cell phones aren’t eliminated from the society, completely; neither are cigarettes due to how many people depend on these products. People in our society become adapted to cell phones and cigarettes causing them to depend on it in their everyday lives.

Rowe and Gursney made a very poor assumption by making a bad comparison of smoking and cellphones. To assume that cellphones and smoking are equally as bad in the society we live in today many people will disagree and very few will agree at least in my opinion. This opinion of mine I can defend by listing the effects of each one of these. The effects of smoking are many, but here ar a few: lung cancer, throat cancer, bad breath, bad teeth, dangerous addiction, strokes, heart attacks and many more other unhealthy conditions; the effects of cellphone usage are only a handful and half as important as opposed to those of smoking. These effects could be: disturbance, distraction, annoyance and the unproven yet theory of ear cancer which seems very unlikely only because there isn't enough information and proof ; there is no way anybody cna compare these two and say they are equally as bad.

    Analogy
Smoking and cellphone usage are two completely different concepts. They very wrong assumption that these two link in a way is absurd. Smoking is a habit that many people around the world have. Its a health related issue that many people disregard and still do smoke. Cell phones on the other hand some people find mandatory to have as opposed to smoking. In todays society more people need cellphones rather than they need cigarettes. I believe that using a cellphone or having a cellphone is important. Its a way of contacting someone and it is also used in many ways that are helpful. Smoking, some people find helpful because of nicotine. As you can see these two dont relate when it comes down to one being very unhealthy and one being used fo various reasons like contacting, talking etc.

  4. Compare & Contrast
The danger cell phone have on people is increasing to the extent cigarettes have. It has been neglecting us from our families in which it’s more of a priority to have it. Cell phones are not only distracting us from the world but they are the cigarettes of the 21st century. Both have been proven to have come from multi-billion companies and have addictive qualities. Advertisement has been a major cause of this; not only to adults and teens but also children. The microwave radiation causes brain tumors which eventually leaves the death. A connection is shown with cigarettes, which causes lung cancer. After going through the first hand effects it has on physically and also from people treating you different, you realize it’s up to you.

    Description
The smell of the smoke was like sanitation trucks all around you. Inhaling and exhaling as if it’s air. Then polluting the air with noise also as she spoke nonsense on her phone. Yelling with anger in her eyes, teeth dark yellow with no care in the world. Nevertheless, the woman seemed to not attend her baby who had tears rolling down his face like a fountain. The baby was being neglected when he needed her and she just kept on talking and talking. I thought, “Wow if only she knows the damage she is causing herself.” This led me to a question whether or not the woman undeniably was harming her household also. I personally doubt she cared.

  5. Analogy
Cell phones are a neccesity and we need them in our everyday lives to communiate with one another and to be reached in the case of an emergency. With cell phones we are able to be reached quickly and timely. In Rowe's article he states that cell phones are just like cigarettes because they both are dangerous. I fully disagree with Rowe because cell phones have not killed anyone. It also does not cause lung cancer or emphysema. Cell phones are not as bad as cigarettes because they do not claim lives.

    Narration
Both authors Rowe and Guernsey use narration in their articles. They each start out with a story. Rowe explains a time when he was in a coffee shop and observing a family. He pays special attention to the father and notices how interested he is in the phone conversation than paying attention to his children. After this story he mentions when he and his wife were traveling to New York on Amtrak and how disturbing that experience was. Guernsey begins his article by telling the story of a man who was in church and a woman's cell phone went off during church. Both of these authors show that cell phones can be a major distraction when used the wrong way. I am for the use of cell phones because they are a sufficient tool in the world, only when they are not being used to cause disturbances and annoy people.

  6. Compare and contrast
Talking on cell phones has become an act that is very much like smoking cigarettes. Cigarettes have become a public nuisance, and have gotten banned in public places like movie theaters and high quality restaurants. Cell phones have also been banned in such places since they also ruin the atmosphere for other people. When these items are used in close proximity with other people the act becomes irritating. They both also cause health problems, although of a different kind. The cell phone poses mental health problems while the cigarette smoking causes physical ones. While both are annoying to others, they are acceptable when used with good manners. Smoking in certain areas is acceptable and using a cell phone so that other people don’t listen to your conversations is also acceptable.

    Description
Sitting down and relaxing by Columbus circle and Central park was like trying to relax in an auditorium full of people, all of whom are all talking at once. Random words and conversations are overflowing constantly like an enormous waterfall. Foul words drenched anybody that is near with their polluted waters. There was no point in trying to concentrate and distill my thoughts since all the information being spread out came crashing through my head and smashed any ideas that were trying to form. Noise was everywhere, a toxic gas that would poison the mind and consume all thoughts. With everybody in his or her own worlds everything felt disconnected and lost. Seeing someone walking with his or her phone out became as frequent as seeing someone with a sweater or jacket on a cold New York day.

  7. Cause and effect
Cell phones are dangerous to people’s health are talking on it for a long time. More and more people own cell phones everyday and more and more of those cell phone acquire some sort of sickness due to the use of their phones. There area long term and short term effects of cell phone use. long-term effects include damage to hearing, cancers, and in some people headaches can occur for a short period of time. According to statistics, it is possible that by the use of cell phones on a regular basis can increase the chances of an individual to acquire brain damage or some sort of other cancer also related to cell phone use. Some cell phone users have stated that they have actually noticed headaches when they got off the phone after being on for a couple hours. If people were conscience of these statistics maybe there would a decrease in the amount of people who actually acquire these cancers.

    Comparison and contrast
Cell phones are not as dangerous as smoking cigarettes, but Both can cause serious health problems in humans such as cancer. Even though using cell phone does not give a person as a much a risk to develop cancer as smoking does they both have an equal effect on a persons health. Long term smokers get lung cancer, lose limbs, and grab some sort of brain damage. Long term cell phone users get short headaches, and about 33% grab brain damage. It obvious to most that smoking would of course be worse than cell phone use because you are intentionally killing yourself with every cigarette you light.

  8. Narration
Cell phones are they good or are they bad? I heard a story last time and after I finish telling you, you will know if they are good or bad. He was a teenager, the age I’m not sure. He was driving to school or from school. While driving, this teenager who was so abscessed with his cell phone that he could not leave that world alone even if it meant his life, decided to text- which means taking his eyes off the road while the car was still moving. In a brief moment of the many moments he’d been texting, he passed a stop sign and unfortunately for another driver who had the right of way, the two cars collided. In the end both drivers died. So I ask you, what you think about cell phones now. You might not be the user but you may end up being the affected.
    Description
The object is small, once in a while you may come across some big ones but that is rare. The user is big way bigger than the object. The small object if in use hypnotizes the big user into another world taking him/her away from the real and causing those around to wonder about their behavior. That behavior is what? You ask. Talking loud is one of them, moving their bodies here and there as if there is an actual person in front of them is another. These characteristics are not normal ways in our modern society. The object playing the cell phone in the end turns the big user into an un-normal person in the society.

  9. Analogy
Rowe clearly makes a comparison in his article stating that cell phones and cigarettes are equally as dangerous. I agree with his comparison or analogy as some might say, not only because of the fact that they are both as dangerous, but also becuase they are both aggravating. Through research it has been proven that cell phones are just as bad for your health as cigarettes if not more. However, they are both disturbing in there own sense. For example, if I were to be at a bus stop and the person to my right were smoking and the person to my left were speaking on there cell phone i would be equally annoyed.

    Compare and Contrast
However much similarity you can find between cigarettes and cell phones, there is also some minor differences. Cigarettes and cell phones can be considered similar when concerning health, due to the fact that they both cause cancers and diseases which are obviously harmful to our health. However, they are also different in the sense that a cigarette smoker can be a little less disturbing then a cell phone user. For example, If I were standing at a bus stop and the person to my right was once again smoking a cigarette and the person to my left were using a cell phone I would be equally annoyed. However, if the same two people were at the bus stop across the street, I would be more annoyed of the cell phone user because I would still be able to hear them if they were speaking rudely, but I wouldn't be as much annoyed of the cigarette smoker because I would more then likely not be able to smell the smoke.

  10. Example
Rowe article shows a few scenarios where we can infer that cellphones have become a priority in people lives. For example, at the beginning of the article is a scene where the father is on his cellphone while his kids and wife are doing something else. Also, another scenario that is presented in Roe’s article is when a woman called her a husband to do something but when the phone rang he automatically picked up. Those two examples indicate how cellphones have become a priority in a person life. I agree with Rowe argument in which cellphones have become something useful but a priority in a person life.

    Analogy
The use of cellphones and smoking are different concepts buy they appear to have something in common. As it’s mentioned on Rowe article cellphones make second-hand noise just like cigarettes that produce second-hand smoke. Cellphones have become a priority in a person life but in some people they have become an addiction just like the nicotine in cigarettes. I agree with this point in Rowe article because both of these concepts can be really harmful for our bodies. For instance, different studies reveals that talking long hours in the cellphone can cause cancer and cigarettes produce lung cancer. However, cellphones and cigarettes are both dangerous in a certain way and people have become dependent in those two concepts.

  11. Examples and illustrations

It has always been a major issue whether or not cell phones should be used in public areas. Many people believe that things like jammers and other devices should be used to prevent the usage of cell phones. However, I believe that cell phones should be allowed in public, especially in cases of emergencies. Many things can go wrong when one goes out, what if you get lost or stranded, or what if someone has a flat tire and nothing is nearby? If cell phones were banned, and people were to use devices like jammers, it would be very difficult to get in contact with someone during such emergencies.

    Comparison and Contrast

The article “Reach Out and Annoy Someone” by Rowe, and the article “Taking the Offensive Against Cell Phones” by Lisa both have one thing in common, their annoyance towards public cell phone usage. Both authors think that something must be done about this issue, and both compare cell phones to cigarettes as their arguments. They believe that talking on the cell phone is just as bad as smoking in front of someone. They believe that noise pollution is just as bad as smoke pollution, they compare secondhand smoking to second hand noise. They feel as if both things cause harm to the people around them, as smoking harms the lungs, noise harms the brain and causes disturbance. I do not agree with these authors thing think that they are being completely ridiculous. Although cell phones can disturb the people around you, but it cannot be as bad as smoking a cigarette, because smoking cigarettes can cause many health problems such as cancer, while speaking on the phone just causes the inconvenience of the person around you.

  13. People should try not to use their cell phones in public places.

    Cause and effect
A cell phone user who speaks in public places is impolite and rude. They don’t realize that their conversation affects everyone around them. Their conversation distracts people who are trying to be productive by preventing them from getting their task done. It’s also rude for people who have companions with them. It shows they would rather give their attention to someone else besides them which might offend their friend. It affects the cell phone user as well. It stops the cell phone user from enjoying the places where they are. They give less thought to their surroundings and can’t fully enjoy the place since their mind is somewhere else.

    Example
For instance, if a person were at a dinner with their friends and was on their cell phone it would be less fun. They would be talking to someone who is not there and missing out on the things that are happening around them. People at the dinner wouldn’t talk to them because they wouldn’t want to disturb the person’s phone conversation. The cell phone user would be an annoyance to the people who are there and trying to have a good time.

This is why cell phone use in public places should be discouraged.

  14. Cell phones shouldn't be used in public places.

    Examples and Illustrations
Cells are very disturbing to the people that surround you especially if someone is reading or trying to concentrate on something very important. For example in the library where people go to do research and study, if someone were to answer there cell phone and start having a conversation usually their not aware of their tone of voice and volume and can distract a lot of people there. Another example in the Guernsey's article is that a group of people were attending church and in the middle of everything where everyone is in deep concentration the lady's cell phone starts to go off and is a huge distraction to everyone including herself, so this is why cell phones shouldn't be used in public places.

    Analogy
Cells phone use and smoking cigarettes are compared in the article of Rowe and even though they are very different they are also very similar. the analogy comes together in the sense that cell phone use is addicting and people cant stop using it as just like smoking people are addicted and cant stop smoking. Also in the Rowe's article it says that cells phone make second hand noise and smoking people experience second hand smoking. this is very similar because the person who is on the phone doesn't care about their surroundings but the second hand person is very distracted and disturbed similarly to the person who smokes the second hand smoker is more affected by it more that the actual smoker. this is why cell phone use shouldnt be used in public places.

I think cellphones are important devices, even though others might disagree with me. for instance a man was on a highway which speed limit was 65mph, he also happenes to be a cop he was off duty so seeing other people driving 120mph was really his problem, until he saw to young adult with a race car going triple over the speed limit. He decided to do something about it even though he didnt have to, but his plan went wrong and he got into an accident; his car rolled and flip off the road and the doors and seat belt was stuck, so if it wasnt for his cellphone which was right next to him, he would have no way to contact anyone about him being in the bushed off the highway.

    Description:
Such a small device but so helpfull and capable of doing wonders. It didn't start that way, the first one of its kind was actually about 50 pounds of mass and about 15-30 inches in size, it then later on evolved and made more efficient. Now it is as small as any object can be, with a smooth texture to it, the smell of a fresh new technology, which looks extremly amazing and now capable of doing anything a computer. The amazing obeject i have just described is what we human beings invented and its called a Cellular Telephone.

  16. Example
In the article “Reach Out and Annoy Someone” by Jonathan Rowe and “Taking the offensive against cell phones by Lisa Guernsey we see how both share their distaste for the usage of cell phones in public places. Although both articles follow their own style to express their reasons and solutions to the reader it is clear that they both agree on the subject matter. I personally disagree with these statements. Cell phones are an important and, at times, necessary for individuals to communicate and be available in case of emergencies. Let’s say, for example, that a doctor needed to be reached at any moment in order to be informed of the status of a patient, if cell jammers were placed in public places it would not be possible to let a doctor know of his patient’s status if he was at a restaurant or at a movie theater. Another example would be a cop or a lawyer who needed to be available as much as possible, it is necessary for this person to have a working cell phone available.

    Analogy
Both Rowe and Guernsey make comparisons in order to show the reader the importance of why cell phones should not be used in public places. One of these comparisons is how cell phones are the new cigarettes. I highly disagree with this because I believe that this comparison is quite exaggerated; cell phones are not a health hazard as cigarettes are because there is still no concrete prove stating that cell phones cause cancer per se. Also, Guernsey makes a statement of how cell phones are like pollution; this is yet another exaggerated comparison. It is understood that these statements are used to show the importance of their arguments, it can also, however, cause the reader to disregard their claims as exaggerated rather than to make them actually consider the author’s point of view.

  17. Example:
Cell phones have no doubt become an influential part of our society, they have increased our productivity by tenfold but in this current day and age they also counter our productivity as well. No longer are they just for business and emergencies. How often have you been annoyed or interrupted by a rude cell phone user. One day while driving I was cut off by a seemingly reckless police car; only later did I realize that that, that reckless cop was talking on his cell phone and driving. I chuckled at the idea of a law enforcer, breaking the law which they do quite often. When is enough, enough? Stricter laws need to be enforced not only for our safety but also to ensure that we as a society don’t become lost in a technological word.

    Analogy:
People on cell phones are the modern day version of zombies. Cell phones have rendered us in a trance as soon as the phone rings, a cell phone induced coma if you will. We become totally unaware of our surroundings only responding to the voice on the other end of the line (our master if you will). Only when the phone is hung up do we escape our trance and become responsive human beings once more.

  18. Analogy

Cell phiones are the mobile device used as a source of communication between people. Many people depend on cell phones as a capable device to convey conversations between users. As cell phones users increase there are many people who face the constant addiction to the many devices. In many instances cell phones are like lies and liers. Once one lies, they have to continually cover up the truth. Once one continually use a cell phone, the use of a cell phone becomes a habitual habit. Cell phones are a stimulant that the psychological part of any human cannot resist just as a smoker cannot resist a cigarette. Therefore cell phones can be a controlling device that can cause many problems within a person and within a person’s surroundings.

    Description

As humans there are many things that influence our everyday life. What is it that intrigues us about cell phones. It is because of it’s mobile capability or is the fad that surrounds it? Could it be the 3G or Bluetooth compatability? These cell phones affect our everyday life. The airwaves are always stimulated because of these devices. New towns and cities over flooded with networks connections because of the demand. The economy always constant because of the ever ready supply for these devices. The devices have effected everyone’s life because of its capability.
